Great work with your EV Comparison!

Wish I would’ve found your site before embarking in a similar project.

I also wanted to share my findings so I made a video https://youtu.be/wFCUG9uVgsc

about the Serramonte VW offer. I wanted to point out that they include grad ($500) and loyalty ($1000) discounts, so those would need to be added to the price as not everyone will qualify for them.

vin said...

Good point, Ofer! Yes, many of the offers referred to here have stacked-up incentives. Folks need to check out the actual dealer web site that we have links to and make sure they qualify for all of them, or adjust the drive-off accordingly.

Unfortunately some dealerships and manufacturers aren't always specific, and either say nothing at all or state "after all offers". In such cases, a call or email to the dealer is necessary.

Vin
Been looking at the Bolt, my wife commutes a long way and needs something like the bolt which gets a good amount of range.
The lease price seems a bit steep which you predicted.
Pre-order a Bolt or wait for a couple months in hope the prices come down a bit.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks!
Tony

Hey Tony!

I just updated the list with the lease offer off of Chevy's website - it's about $500 less over 3 years than the Leasehackr estimate that I previously posted, so it's a little less steep. So, my thoughts are that if you don't need a car immediately and the lease offer isn't palatable (i.e. you sit in it and it doesn't "feel" like a $400/mo car. i.e. a BMW or Benz, and that kind of thing matters to you, which would kinda make you a bit like me), wait for the initial hype to cool down. I've read some reviews on forums that were posted by average folk like me, and there seems to be a number of people that say it feels "cheap" on the inside. I haven't checked one out yet, but I plan to do so over the holidays since I'll be turning in my Gen 1 Volt in a month or so.

I'm probably going to wait to replace the Volt until the Bolt hype dies down, then make a decision (Bolt, Volt, Pacifica PHEV, or ???). I give it 3 to 6 months. Just a hunch, but I think that with the 100-mile EVs and additional PHEVs entering the market really soon, as well as the anticipated 200-mile EVs coming in the not-so-distant future, Chevy will be smart and try to flood the streets with as many Bolts as possible before too many other options appear for us to consider.

Unknown said...

Vin your totally right, stay calm through the hype and we'll be rewarded.
We aren't in need of a car immediately, so we'll test drive one soon and be on the look out for a deal. Your right, it does not appear to be a 400/month car, but I do like the range.
Happy Holidays to your and your Family!

The Serramonte VW deal is $49 per month, not $19.

vin said...

Thanks Chris! Serramonte VW must update their specials more than once/week. Looks like they upped their offer on an e-Golf SEL by $30/mo also. I will update the list tonight.

Updates from Cardirect.

BOLT lease looks more real compared to early Leasehacker #'s

vin said...

Thanks Ton!!! I'm including CarsDirect numbers for the Bolt and Prius Prime on the dealer list... I figure that although they're not a "dealer", they do sell cars, and in some cases I can't verify their #s with data on factory website. Or they're just different from the factory deals that normal folk like me can see.

This was 2 weeks ago tomorrow, but the deals are out there:
VW Egolf SE (DCFC), 7500 miles, 30 months
$4000 down (let me put it all on Credit card - $60 off at 1.5% cash back)
$68 month (29 more payments).
This included $500 off for recent grad and $500 off for employee of local tech company (He said if I had a Vw he could have given me another $1000 off).

Serramonte VW, worked with Rilee Archer- he was great.

I will get the refund from California for total down of $1500, total out of pocket = $3472 - 60 ($3412).

vin said...

Congrats on the great deal, Will! That's like $113/mo on average, right? That's less than my family's cell phone plan!

Topangan said...

Team VW and others include grad $500 and loyalty $1000 discounts which not everyone qualifies for. Can you please add these to drive off costs to level the playing field? Thanks for all the work that you do.

vin said...

Hi Ofer - I thought about this a few times, and the problem is that across the board, dealers are not consistent with even mentioning which incentives are included in their offer. From week to week, some dealers go as far as changing whether or not they include a particular incentive in their advertised offer. So I don't think it would be much help for me to mention it on this site, and it would certainly require more work. My hope is that folks use this site to identify a few dealers worth talking to, then negotiate with the dealers based on the information on the factory and dealer websites that we provide links to.

Tried to lease a Toyota Prius Prime in NorCal yesterday (Oakland). Dealer has raised MSRP to 33,325 "due to demand." Agent told us all dealerships in the Bay Area are doing the same until the cars are more widely released and that people are paying for it. A 36/15k lease would have run us nearly $600/month including tax. I don't remember the exact breakdown, but anyone looking for this car should WAIT. When we objected, agent said "well, you're not poor." Doesn't mean I should be ripped off!

vin said...

Yikes! What a pain, Rebecca. I guess we're lucky here in SoCal since we have Dianne Whitmire at Carson Toyota. She hasn't posted any lease deals yet, but she openly communicates dealer inventory status and purchase offers (currently MSRP less factory incentives) on priuschat.com... I think she helps keep other dealers in the area honest, lest they lose a good chunk or their business to Carson.

Hey, if you need one right away and are okay with MSRP less any factory incentives (no discount, but most importantly, no dealer markup), I'd recommend contacting CarsDirect.com to see if they could get you the lease deal they reported on their web site. Might get lucky!

Got a good deal from Nissan serramonte. 2017 leaf 30kw battery and 6.6 charge. $2000 out the door and $120 a month inclusive of taxes.

vin said...

That's a great deal!!! Thanks for the tip! I checked Serramonte Nissan's website, and I'm adding their advertised offer to the list. I appreciate the help!!!

Hi Vin,

I have been lurking around for a few weeks for e-Golf price drops in the San Diego area. I test drove one today at VW Kearny Mesa and got an asking price of $1500 drive-off at $169/mo. I didn't qualify for the loyalty discount, which would have knocked off $1k.

Its the first time I've seen a lease breakdown and I was shocked by how much interest and taxes add to the advertised price, so I didn't bite. Considering the pricing difference, it might actually be worthwhile to lease an e-Golf from a Norcal dealer and have it transported down to SD...

vin said...

Thanks for the tip on Kearny Mesa! I've added them to the list.

Your deal is actually a pretty competitive one, in my opinion. Their ad offer, which is the best in the So Cal area that I'm aware of, includes the $1K loyalty incentive. So I'm guessing that you're getting a discount of about $700 or so off of their ad offer. But you are right, a couple of the NorCal dealers do seem to have much better deals.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Kearny Mesa deal is for 10K miles/year, whereas everyone else is advertising offers for 7.5K miles/year. If you talk to the other dealers, I'd suggest making sure they offer the same mileage limit as Kearny Mesa. Or maybe see if Kearny Mesa will offer you a lower monthly payment for a 7.5K miles/year lease.

Finally, I thought I read somewhere that VW also has a competitive lease incentive of $1K. If so, perhaps you can take advantage of that?

Good luck!

Capital Expressway Fiat in San Jose is closing on January 3rd, 2017.

I had my 20K service appointment cancelled and had to go to Burlingame Fiat, 38 miles out of my way. So they will either be having a clearance, or they may simply vaporize next week. Don't count on the validity of the ad link.

vin said...

Thanks for the heads-up, Mitchell! I just pulled their deal from the list since they took it off of their website.

Unknown said...

Great site Vin! Great service yo're doing for people looking for an EV. I called Team VW in Hayward and the total price is much more than what I was expecting/hoping. They want $5200 upfront and then $35/month for the eGolf SE w/o DCFC. Total after 2.5 years is $6215 or $207/month.

vin said...

Thanks! $5200 up-front sounds about right if you can't take advantage of the $1000 loyalty rebate nor the $500 recent college grad rebate. Here's my guess:

1499 down
35 1st payment
813 tax on down, 1st payment, and $7500 incentive
625 acquisition fee
400 license
90 doc fee

1000 loyalty rebate
500 college grad rebate
----
$4962 total due at signing

So the phone quote you got is about $250 more than what I think the one-only ad car was offered at. Looks like the ad car is no longer in stock, so I'm thinking that your quote was for a similar in-stock 500e and didn't include the two incentives that total $1500.

If your quote did include one or both of those incentives, I'd say you have some negotiating room.

Unknown said...

He quoted me $3000 without the college grad and loyalty discounts and then $2200 to cover the doc, acq, and tax. I thought about buying a 2001 Beetle on CL for $1000 to $1200 to get the $1000 rebate and then selling it immediately after for the same price I paid, but that sounds like a serious hassle. Any hacks to get the college grad discount or loyalty discount?

I feel like they had better deals on the eGolf last year sometime (I've been considering this lease for a while). I'm also considering the Kia Soul EV but I wanted a lease deal under 5K and ideally for 2 years.

Unknown said...

Nice to find your website. I'll probably be trading in my Leaf in about 6 months for another e-car. Curious though, why no Mitsubishi i-MiEV models listed?

vin said...

Unknown: Yes, there were a couple of occasions (Labor Day weekend the month of November) that Serramonte VW had deals that were better than Team VW's current e-Golf deal. Sorry, I don't know of a way to get around the recent college grad or loyalty discount, except maybe include someone on the title that you trust that meets either or both criteria.

As far as leasing for 2 years - I suggest sticking to 30 months or greater of you're in California so you can qualify for the $2500-$4000 CVRP incentive.

vin said...

Thanks, Jennie! I used to cover the i-MiEV factory lease deal, but Mistu quit publishing it on their web site last September. It wasn't a good deal anyway... $189/mo+tx for 36 months, $3388+tx/lic due at signing. I never did find a dealer that had a lease offer on it. I stopped looking after Mitsu no longer had their factory offer.

Ryan T said...

I just wanted to say thank you for your efforts here - I got a great deal on a Kia Soul EV+... all thanks to your work and info on this site!

vin said...

Thanks Ryan! My motivation is knowing that folks are able to use this data to work a great deal. Congrats on the EV+!!!

Todd and Kari said...

The KIA factory leases appear to now be 39 months rather than 36. Thank you for this great lease resource. All your work is appreciated!

vin said...

Thanks Todd and Kari!!! Looks like they've updated their offer since I last looked. That's a slightly better deal, and now the EV-e offer is back. Would not have caught that update without your help... I will update the tables tonight. Thanks!!!

I am looking for e-golf in socal but didnt find any deal. Thinking about getting it shipped for norcal
How can I get this deal ? simply show the dealer this website ?

vin said...

Hi Vnay -

If you're looking to get an advertised deal, I'd say first order of business is to ask if the ad car is still available. If not, ask them if they'll offer an identical unit in stock (except maybe the same color) for the ad price. If they agree, and you're serious about getting the car, get over to the dealer ASAP and pick up the car. Note that their ad deals probably include special incentives (i.e. loyalty rebate); make sure you understand whether or not you qualify for it and if not, make sure you are okay with the cost without the incentives you can't take advantage of.

If it's a Norcal dealer and you're here in So Cal, ask them what it will take to seal the deal before you take the trip. I've never done this myself (others have, check the forums), but personally I'd want the deal documented in detail at least in an email and I'd expect them (and want them) to require a deposit. Also, I suspect you're cost-conscious like me... so I wouldn't want to have it shipped... instead I'd get a one-way rental from Enterprise, drive up, then drive back down with the e-Golf (assuming you want one with DCFC).

If it were me, I'd try to work a deal with a So Cal dealer that would be within $20/mo-$30/mo of the NorCal dealers. And yes, I'd show them the NorCal ads in person and tell them I'm gonna make a trip tomorrow if they can't work a deal today. Failing that, I'd immediately call the NorCal dealers and start preparing for the trek.

Hope this helps...

Hi, vin...

Looking at a listed lease 3 year total, I don't see how the math adds up to what's listed. Can you please break it down?

Thanks!

vin said...

Hi Ali - Sure, I can break it down. Which number are you looking at?

Ali Shafai said...

In the matrix where the monthly, tax and drive off information is listed, along with a 3-year total. I am just trying to see how the 3-year total is calculated. I was looking at both the Fiat 500e and the BMW i3 listings.

vin said...

Hi Ali-

Okay, for dealer offers that don't include tax and license (most of the offers) the total is calculated as follows:

total = (monthly payment)* (months-1) + (drive off)

Note that the above does not include tax nor license

Some offers (like Thousand Oaks Fiat) that state acquisition fee is not included, so:

total = (monthly payment) * (months-1) + (drive off) + (acq fee)

For offers that include tax and license in the drive off (i.e. Mossy, Bob Baker:)

total = (monthly payment) * (1 + sales tax rate) * (months - 1) + (drive off)

Note that this total includes tax and license, so it will be some amount higher than a similar offer that doesn't include tax and license, probably for a Fiat it's about $1000 - $1200 more.

In the ranking tables, I try to extract the tax and license from offers that include it. So, say you're trying to compare the Bob Baker Fiat offer to the factory offer. On the surface, the factory offer total ($4914+tax+lic) might look more attractive than the Bob Baker total ($5336), but if you look at the dealer offer ranking table where I extracted the estimated tax and license, Bob Baker is at a $4189 total over 3 years, which is about $700 less than the factory offer.

Hope this makes sense... if there are particular numbers in the tables don't look right, let me know, I've been known to fat finger the wrong number from time to time.

Hurjio said...

Hi, appreciate all the work you put in to gather this information. Correct me if I'm wrong, but usually you have to pay taxes on lease/bonus cash the dealer provides right? For example for the Fiat 500e(Bob Baker), the offer usually comes w/$7500-8500 lease cash (pretty much to offset the federal rebate). Taxes on that is pretty significant, ~$800. I've never leased a car before, so I'm a bit unfamiliar.

vin said...

Thanks, MLC! You are correct, for the most part, in my experience. Most manufacturer incentives are cash applied to an agreed-upon purchase price, or in lease speak, "capitalized cost". That means the incentive is treated as "capital reduction", as will any down payment (cash or trade) that is applied. Any capital reduction, at least in California, is subject to sales tax. So yes, from comments I've seen here and on other forums, the 500e incentives are taxable. In my experience, GM, Ford, and Toyota incentives are also taxable.

The one exception I've personally experienced is with Mercedes. On our 2015 B-Class Electric, the capitalized cost indicated on the contract was like $13K under MSRP, and I put $0 down, so the only tax charged was on the first payment due at signing. There was no cap reduction amount on the contract. Not sure if any other mfrs do that, but I feel like it saved me about $800-$1000, figuring the "undisclosed" incentive that I believe goes straight to the dealer without any consent from the customer was a little more than $10K... I suspect the normal incentive on the B-Class was equal to the fed tax incentive of $7500, and I heard that the Winter Sales Event incentive at the time was about $3000.

So for Fiat, the answer is yes, from what I have seen the incentive is taxable. It kinda sucks, but I guess it doesn't bother me because it's better than having to cough up the sales tax on the full sales price like on a purchase. We only have to pay tax on the cap cost reduction and on each monthly payment, so after three years, we should have only paid about half the sales tax when compared to a purchase.

There are probably resources out there that explain this better than I just did. Leaseackr is a good place to start:

https://leasehackr.com/blog/2015/9/19/8-things-you-should-know-before-leasing-a-new-car

Or, we can always play 20 questions, as long as you don't mind mind my slow turnaround time :-)

I'll be interested when it drops to a more reasonable amount.
As much as I like the car, I can't see paying so much.

Hi vin,

I caved and made my way up to Nor-Cal from San Diego over the rainy weekend for the 30 month lease of eGolf SE w/ FC at Team VW Hayward. The drive back down, let me just say was an ordeal of epic proportion. But that was expected. Next time, I am definitely having BEV shipped instead.

The lease cost came out to be just under $7500 w/ 7.5k mi/yr for 30 months, (0.0019 money factor that couldn't be negotiated) versus just over $8500 w/ 10k mi/yr for 36 months (0.000983 money factor), as quoted by VW Kearney Mesa. All the other San Diego dealers quoted lower money factors, so maybe that's how these two are getting VW Financial to go along with the terms. Anyways, I strain just to reach 8k miles of driving per year, so the reduced mileage works for me. I am approaching the entire BEV experience as an experiment, and so the overall lease cost has been the primary driver.

But this entire thing wouldn't have been possible without all your work to make this information so easily available to people like me, so thank you very much!

vin said...

Congrats on the deal! Saving a thousand bucks is huge in my book, especially over 30 months. My wife puts about 6K/year on her car, so a 7.5Kmi/yr would work great for her too. I think we'd be overpaying by $30 to $50/mo on her EV leases if I didn't occsionally use her car for my commute.

It also sounds like accolades are in order for completing the trek on what was probably the wettest weekend of the decade. Glad to hear you made it home safe. Please let me know if you document your trip on a blog or VW forum or something, would love to read about it. Thanks for reporting back... Hearing about successful deals keeps me motivated!

Can you tell me the break down of your cost for Team VW Hayward.
I am in san Diego and looking for the same.

Is $7500/30 mos after or before CA Rebate check ?

Anonymous said...

About $5k is due up front, $1k less with loyalty discount. Remainder is divided into 29 payments. This does NOT include the CACVR. So its actually about $5k for 30 months after the rebate.

Hope that helps.

Anonymous said...

None of these deals are available as I talked to many dealership over email.

vin said...

That's disappointing, Vnay. Did they say why? Did they sell all the ad cars? Did you refer them to their own web site?

Anonymous said...

their ad is not very clear. t didn't mention any downpayment hence they can play in whatever way they can.
Their ad is just bait and switch the practice they have been deploying for ever

vin said...

Which ad, Vnay? All the ads I link to on this site mention a down payment or drive off at the time that I reviewed it. If I find an ad that has a monthly but no drive-off, I don't mention it here.

As far as the bait and switch practice - are you saying that they didn't have the ad car anymore, so they're trying to sell you the same model and trim level, different unit for a higher price? That's just part of the negotiation. Tell them you want the ad deal on the non-ad car, and if they say no and don't provide a counter-offer, ask them for one. Negotiate.

One of the main reasons why I put this list together is so we have information to make counter-offers and decisions while negotiating a deal. If you don't like negotiating, then your first question to the dealer should be whether or not they have the ad car in stock. If not, cease communication and try somewhere else, or keep driving your current ride. Or buy a Tesla - since their tactic is to simply dictate what we shall pay, and then our only decision at that point is to decide yes or no.

I'm not sure if you're commenting out of frustration (I hear ya - car shopping and negotiating can be a painful experience) or if you're asking for help. If it's the latter, provide specifics and I would be happy to provide insight/guidance.

Pulled the trigger on an e-Golf (DCFC $31625 MSRP) last week. $98 per month (tax incl) with $3K drive off (30/10K). PGE rebate gets $500 back and $2500 State refund if eligible - which would equal zero down. Stevens Creek VW.

Potential total lease cost for 30 months/10K miles is under $3K. Less than my phone or cable bill.

Really wanted to get the Bolt but the lease cost is over 4x for the Bolt at this time.

Is it true that the State of California reversed its position on BEV vs. Hybrids. If I read it right the green sticker is now without limit or expiration and the white sticker has a 2019 expiration.

Hi Vin...

How does this offer look to you compared to others that you've been tracking on an i3?

Hey Ali -

Really sorry about the slow reply. The $0 down offer at the URL you specified is virtually identical on a monthly average basis to the one I refer to in the table; the $0 down looks to actually be about $5/mo less. If it were me I would definitely prefer the $0 down since I like to minimize the up-front cost.

As far as the green stickers - CA did not reverse their position on BEVs vs PHEVs; they merely lifted the limit on the # of green stickers that can be issued. The white stickers for BEVs, CNG, Fuel Cell, etc have always been unlimited in that respect. Both are set to expire in 2019; however CA may choose to not extend the green sticker validity beyond 2019 (they may expire like the yellow ones did years ago). I suspect the white stickers will be extended again.

As far as buying here in CA, check out this FAQ from Rydell:

Could I ask why the Ford Electric 2016 has a negative drive off of $1236?
I never own an EV before and live in an apartment therefore I need to find public charging station. Is this the best website to do that? https://www.plugshare.com/#
Does Public station in this list mean i can charge my car there?

vin said...

duc1986d - a negative drive-off on the ranking table is shown on $0 drive-off offers because I don't include tax and license on the drive-off amount. This is so that the ranking table can be used as an apples-to-apples comparison between lease offers. For that Focus Electric $0 drive-off offer, the dealer is rolling the up-front tax and license (about 9% of the huge lease incentive, plus ~$350 license) into the 35 remaining monthly payments instead of collecting it up-front.

Plugshare is in my opinion the best website to find public charging stations. In general, yes, if Plugshare says it's public, it's accessible to all. But it's important to read the description and comments by users for any parking fees, hours of availability, etc.

Anonymous said...

@Vin, Serramonte Ford offers me the Ford Electric 2016 for $141 per month with 0 drive off fees and I can apply for the California State Rebate of $2,500 for clean car
So the total cost would be 141*36-2500 = $2,576

The sales guy quoted me a car price of $26,715.8
And I found the true car price of $24,481
I asked him to lower the price and he said that lease special is not qualified for special purchase incentives. Is that true? or can I negotiate for lower sales price to get lower monthly lease payment?

vin said...

Hi flightdealer.net - yeah, that lease deal is unbelievable! If I were in NorCal I would have picked up the white one that they had on Friday.

Yes, the dealer is correct from what I can see - the incentive on a lease is $15,000, and the incentive on a purchase is $7000 according to the price estimator on ford.com. The lease incentive includes the $7500 federal tax credit - ford passes it on to the consumer.

What I would do if you really want to own forever (or at least longer than 3 years) is to ask what the residual value is. If the residual+total lease payments is less than buying the FFE, or if you don't want to wait to get the tax credit a year from now, I'd say lease it.

I just saw the deal for the 10k off for UC students. Crazy good deal! It seems like multiple UC's and all California Nissan dealerships are supposed to have the promo. Does anyone know how strict they are in checking if you're a current student or not though (what if you're an alumni) as the flyer seems to state that you just need to bring in the flyer and your student ID Card.

For the 2016 Focus electric at Serramonte, what is the credit shown in the drive off?

vin said...

Hi Shubho -

That same question came up last week - sounds like I need to work on a FAQ!

A negative drive-off on the ranking table is shown on $0 drive-off offers because I don't include tax and license on the drive-off amount. This is so that the ranking table can be used as an apples-to-apples comparison between lease offers. For the Focus Electric $0 drive-off offer, the dealer is rolling the up-front tax and license (about 9% of the huge lease incentive, plus ~$350 license) into the 35 remaining monthly payments instead of collecting it up-front.

If this doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll try to explain it differently.

Thank you for all the great info that you have put together Vin.

I am looking at the KIA Soul EV+ listed @ kia of Downtown LA. Their add shows $149 per month for 39 months with $2199 due at signing. I am new to EV's as well as new to lease's, so is there anything else that I should know?

The add says 'OFFER VALID ON TWO AT THIS OFFER K21815, K22433' I was asking the dealership is they have either of these still available, but I can't seem to get a direct answer. The dealership is about a 35 mile one way trip for me, so I would really like to know if they really do have this deal available. If I did get this lease, what other charges/fees am i looking at in addition to the $2,199 that is due at signing? Would this lease deal allow me to also receive the $2500 rebate from the state? The milage term is 10k miles per year.

thanks for any info!!!!

vin said...

Thanks Scott! Hey, sorry it's taking a bit long to get back to you.

According to their ad, there is nothing else due at signing:
"$2,199 INCLUDE GOVERNMENT FEES AND TAXES TOTAL DUE AT SIGNING.
NO SECURITY DEPOSIT REQUIRED, ANY FINANCE CHARGES , ANY DEALER DOCUMENT PROCESSING CHARGE , ANY ELECTRONIC FILING CHARGE , AND EMISSION TESTING CHARGE ."

As far as the units that this offer applies to, right now it says "OFFER VALID ON TWO AT THIS OFFER K22790, K22654". The two you mentioned are no longer listed on their website, but 790 and 654 are still there.

This lease will allow you to get the $2500 rebate, from what I can tell, so long as you don't exceed the income threshold. Minimum lease term to qualify is 30 months.

So if you haven't already gone to DTLA to get the deal, I'd recommend emailing or calling a couple of dealers close to you, tell them about the DTLA deal, and tell them you will be in their dealership in 20 minutes if they can match that deal. Let them know that you're heading to LA in 30 minutes if they can't match it. Make sure that they understand that the $2199 is out-of-pocket due at signing, not a down payment. Make sure it's an EV+, and bring a printout of the DTLA deal and in-stock units that they apply to if they end up saying they'll match it.

Good luck, please let me know how it goes, even if you're waiting 'til next week to try to make a deal. DTLA's deal is good 'til 3/10 so you probably have some time.

Got the following lease on 2/17/2017 -

2016 White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat with Leather
10500 miles per year, 36 months
$31635 MSRP
$26542 Sales Price
$15200 Rebates
$0 Total Drive Off (dealer pays 1st month payment, reg, taxes, doc, carpool tags, etc)
$119.03 Payment + $10.12 Tax = $129.15 Total Monthly Payment

Total cost for 3 years is $4520.25 minus CA Rebate of $2500 minus PGE rebate of $500 = $1520.25 = $42.23 per month net.

Was not able to pickup the car until 2/27/2017 as they had to replace the charging port. They have no more cars left to replicate the same deal.

Great site!! Thanks for all the info and updates.

I snagged a Ford Focus Electric yesterday from Galpin Ford (So Cal), fully loaded. MSRP $31,500. Referencing thecarsdirect quote page for $16k in rebates and their $119/mon, $669 down, I wound up getting it for $1669 out the door and $136.82/month ($125.81 + $11.01 tax).

I already had a Ford Focus Electric on lease, expiring next month. Galpin was able to do the lease-end inspection and take it on the spot. I wasn't expecting to do all that yesterday (didn't have any of the paper work or even both key fobs). The new lease is more than half what I was paying on my first Focus Electric! (learned a *lot* from this web site).

I was considering a Bolt, but the Focus Electric fits most of my needs (daily commute of around 70 miles) and with the aggressive model end promotions, it was an easier choice. I'm hoping the new Sync 3/CarPlay works a lot better than the old Microsoft Sync (that was really my only complaint with the previous car).

Galpin likes to do add-ons on all their cars, so my new Focus Electric also has tinted windows and LoJack and I basically got those free. They didn't play any games once we agreed on the numbers. The paper work took quite a while though since they were also doing the vehicle inspection for the return (supposedly they're the only dealer that has on-site lease inspectors) but they bought me lunch. When the sales rep delivered my car he mentioned I also qualify for a free iPad Mini! (I told my kids I could ebay that and get enough for at least another payment but I guess we'll keep it).

vin said...

Awesome, vrabbit8! Sounds like a killer deal... tax on that $16K rebate is over $1400, and you have over $1K in options so by my rough calculations you got a deal that's about $1200 better than the deal shown on the carsdirect website.

That deal is about ONE THIRD of the lease deal I got on a '13 White Platinum FFE with leather. How times have changed!

I'm kinda looking at the Bolt too, as a replacement for my RAV4 EV - just extended the lease for another 6 months - but unless the Bolt lease drops to something like $300/mo for the premium trim by August, I will likely keep the RAV4 by paying the $17K residual. Like you, I don't need a 200+ mile range to make my commute (mine is about 80 miles RT, and we have workplace L2 charging).

Thanks for reporting in! Your deal is a great example of how the data gathered here can be used to get a great deal at any dealership, including the ones that aren't listed.

Thanks for this blog; it's really helpful.

You may want to note that both Team VW of Hayward & Serramonte VW deals assume you are (1) a VW car owner ($1000 off) and (2) a recent college grad (within 2 years; $500 off).

If you don't qualify for those it's $1500 more. I called both.

The total for Hawyard is about $4700 which still seems promising, and they have some inventory left.

The total for Serramonte is about $6200 for 2.5 years, and they only have 1 car left in stock.

Sunnyvale VW

$4204 +
$5488 due signing
~$6900 total

hey Vin, where did you get the Bolt lease info "$397/mo + tax
$397+ tax, lic drive-off" that you have listed? I can't find that info on the chevy website.

Also, FYI Fremont Chevy is doing $3000 off MSRP as well, like Dublin. Seems all the inventory is accumulating so they are discounting more (great for me, since my lease is up in a couple weeks!)

vin said...

Hi Kieran - You've reminded me... I need to put some kind of note on the lease deals page that says the deals may include conditional offers. Also, thanks for the heads-up on the 2016 Soul EVs at Stevens Creek... I'll update tonight. Thanks for the help!!!

Hey funk.sf - I used the Build and Price tool on Chevy's website; you can get there from the chevrolet.com link in the above table. I sense you may have already tried that, and if you did and a lease option didn't appear, try checking the zip code field - mine defaults to some random zip code that doesn't result in the lease calculator appearing. I've tried a CA zip code and a MA zip code, and the lease calculator comes up. Let me know if it still doesn't work for you.

vin said...

Hi again Kieran - hey you helped me realize that the Stevens Creek lease deals are for 2017 models, not 2016! I just corrected the tables on this page accordingly. I checked their online inventory listing, looks like the EV-e and EV+ that are on special are still in stock. Thanks again for the help!!!

The Dublin Chevrolet Premier offer is not $299 drive off. I visited them yesterday.
The drive off price is $2434.87 (Minus $500 discount if you currently have a competitive lease.)

vin said...

Hi Jaganath -

Are you referring to the Boardwalk offer on a Volt Premier? On that one, I'm assuming (and I hate assuming, but it seemed like a safe assumption on that one) a $0 down, even though they didn't explicitly say that. $299 of the drive-off is for the first payment. Since their offer is conditional (ad says all will not qualify), I am assuming it includes the competitive lease discount. Tax on all offers and on the first payment should be about $635. License should be about $400. Doc fee, maybe $80. So my guess at the total drive-off which includes 1st payment, tax, doc fee and license is about $1333, which is about $600 less than what they quoted you if you have a competitive lease. Coincidentally (or perhaps not), the acquisition fee for a Chevy is $595, so maybe they are charging for that in the drive-off?

Did they give you a breakdown of how much of that drive-off is first payment, taxes, license, doc fee, and perhaps acquisition fee? Just wondering... Thanks!!!

Scott W said...

Hey Vin

I am going to test drive a Ford Focus elec this weekend at McCoy Mills ford in Buena Park. The lease price I was quoted from email was as follows:

msrp = $31,635
down payment = $2,269
monthly lease pmt = $123 (before tax)
36 month total $6,683
residual is 31% of msrp ($16,490)

this would be for 36 months with 10,500 miles per year. Is there anything or extra charges I am missing? I am new to leases.

vrabbit8 said...

Scott W: that seems like a pretty good deal. Similar to mine (I'm assuming like mine it's the 2016 model).

$2269 drive off should include the 1st month, all the DMV fees, etc.
$123 + tax @ 8.75% is $10.76 = $133.76 per month
35 (months) x $133.76 = $4681.60
so the total for 36 months would be $6950.60.

You should be able to get the $2500 air resources rebate.

The 2016 Ford Focus Electrics are running out so there's little choices on colors and options. I only found one that had cloth seats (vs leather) when I was looking several weeks ago. I think you might still be able to squeeze the dealer a little more. On top of my deal, they gave me a brand new iPad Mini (wasn't even expecting it). And since I also had some hassles with the battery, they also gave me the USB hub that I needed to make Apple CarPlay work (I guess it's standard on the 2017 model, but considered a dealer upgrade in the 2016 model).

vin said...

Hey Scott W.. .+1 on everything vrabbit8 said. All I can add is I'd confirm that the $2269 is all you need to give them to drive off in the FFE. Many folks (dealers included) use the terms "down" and "drive-off" interchangeably, and I'd make sure the $2269 is your total drive-off. If it's really just the down payment, they will want another $1500 or so from you up-front, and you should be able to do better with another dealer that has one left. Let us know how it goes!

vrabbit8 - thanks!!!

This has been a phenomenal site for my soul EV lease research. I'm really hoping to pull the trigger on the deal but struggling to get socal dealers to match lee johnson lease deal. On your lease offers for EV base it states $1400 drive off but lee johnson's site says $2966 down payment. Is the difference between those supposed to be tax, license, and doc as your note below the table suggests? Also is the $91 p/mo you have listed equal to their $99 listed minus tax? Thanks for all your help. I'm new to leasing and this has been immensely helpful.

Scott W said...

hey Vrabbit8,

When you said "I snagged a Ford Focus Electric yesterday from Galpin Ford (So Cal), fully loaded. MSRP $31,500. Referencing thecarsdirect quote page for $16k in rebates and their $119/mon, $669 down, I wound up getting it for $1669 out the door and $136.82/month ($125.81 + $11.01 tax)."

did you have any other credits for your trade-in to get that out the door price down to $1669?

I sent an email to McCoy Mills as asked them to verify their price and they did not include the tax in their drive off price. So now their updated quote is $2269 out the door and a monthly pmt of $174 (includes tax). That now put the 36 month total cost about $1400 higher than they initially led me to believe.

I have contacted Galpin for a quote, but I wanted to know what trade in or other discounts you had to get you to that price.....
thanks

vrabbit8 said...

Scott W: no, I did not have any other trade-in credit etc. I did have my previous FFE 2014 that I still had a month left, including one more payment on it. They did the inspection and took it back and I was still responsible for the last payment.

I referenced the CarsDirect quote that mentioned $669 down and $119/month. We agreed on $1669 for the $125.81 + $11.01 tax monthly payment. I figured it had leather which is usually a $1k option and the car had tinted windows and LoJack (they retail list that at over $1k) but they didn't factor those into the price since I told them where I wanted to be. There was also none of the sales baloney with trying to add other things on.

Art Ramirez was my sales rep and he was great. Very responsive. Since the paper work was taking a while (since it also included the vehicle inspection which involved other people) he got me a voucher for lunch. Galpin has an on-site restaurant. I'd highly recommend working with Art. He's returned all my calls/texts when I had some service issues. I think they still have some 2016s left including the Blue Candy one that I looked at. My guess is you should be able to get the same deal I got.

Good luck, Joe

vrabbit8 said...

Forgot to mention something else, they even let me put the $1669 down on a credit card! (I thought they'd want a check or 3% more for CC). They also were really good on the paper work, including giving me a copy of all the forms that are needed for the Air Resources rebate (sure you can assemble that on your own but it's much easier if they already give you all those since they need it for their paper work).

I've shopped cars in the past but have never had such a smooth transaction, hassle free. I'd highly recommend them.

Joe

Scott W said...

Thanks Joe. I will for sure look into it.

Hey cheapest -

I interpreted the Lee Johnson "total down" as drive-off due at signing, i.e. including any tax, license, and fees. So for the ranking table, I backed out 9.5% WA tax on the cap reduction (rebate and down payment) to come up with $1400 "down payment".

I am glad you asked, because it triggered something in my head that I thought I read about Washington state EV benefits... well I looked around and found that Washington does not tax EV purchases, so I should not have backed out any sales tax. Looks like in WA licensing is much less than in CA ($30), which is in the noise so for the ranking purposes I will ignore the fee.

So, long story short, we should consider the Lee Johnson $2966 "total down" as "down payment", not "total drive-off". So it's $99/mo+tax, $2966+tax+lic drive-off.

Thanks so much for asking, cheapest. I'll correct the "Details and Links" table tonight, and the ranking tables will be corrected at the next update on Saturday. Let me know if you have any other questions, and please let me know how your quest for a Soul turns out!

Scott W said...

Thx again Joe and Vin for your help. I leased my 2016 focus EV from Art Ramirez at Galpin Ford. Very smooth transaction and Art provided great service and was very professional.

I was able to get a deal close to Joe's except he received a $1000 credit for a ford loyalty program since he returned a focus that was on a prior lease.

so my deal was almost the same as Joe, but I had to put down $2500 as my total drive off cost and my monthly pmt will be $143. Still happy with the car and the deal as I should get the $2500 back from the state and i will save around $85 per month in saved gas purchases. that puts my net cost around $60 per month.

vrabbit8 said...

Great to hear Scott W! Yeah, sorry I forgot how they broke down all the discounts.

In addition to the gas savings, you'll feel be happy when you drive by those gas stations (and lines at Costco when you're not there early).

Trying to understand the math behind this posted offer:

"Team VW $19/mo + tax $2500 + 1st pmt, acq, tax, lic drive-off 2.5-year total: $3195 + tax, lic 7.5K miles/year"

In the spreadsheet format, I assume Drive Off means Total Drive Off (Down + Drive Off Fees. So $2644 equals $2500 down + $144 Drive Off fee. Next I have to add back "tax, license, doc fees."

A sales has quoted me the follow Drive Off fees: "1st month payment acq fee $625 ,$7500 federal rebate tax $981 +dmv$ 320 ,$8.25tires fees, $80documents =roughy total $2100 to $2200"

My question is from the figures quoted by the Sales, what amounts do I have add back to get my true 2.5 year total? Thanks in advance.

vin said...

James L -

Sorry for the delayed response. In the ranking table (spreadsheet format), drive off amount is without tax and license and any dealer doc fees. So you are correct.

As far as the sales quote, it sounds like you need to add the down payment and the total of all monthly payments plus tax for months 2 through 36 (35 months total). So assuming tax is 9%, here's my guess:

2200 + 2500 down + 35 * (19*1.09)= $5425

James L. said...

Hi Vin,

Thanks for replying. I'm some what clearer on what my true total cost would be. However, I'm still puzzled on how you arrive with your total drive. In my example, your total drive off is $2500 (down) + $144 (drive fee). What does the $144 cover in your calculation?

Secondly, the quote I received is roughly $2200 for drive-off fee: "1st month payment acq fee $625 ,$7500 federal rebate tax $981 +dmv$ 320 ,$8.25tires fees, $80documents =roughly total $2100 to $2200". Is this negotiable (or which part is negotiable)? It doesn't appear any of the component is negotiable. If so, your disclaimer of "tax, license, doc fees" should then also include acquisition fee as not included? Also, is the down negotiable?

Thirdly, your best dealer offers list is almost exclusively CA dealers. It appears to me it would be more effective if your Drive Off included down + all dealer drive off fees (with notation of the local tax rate for that particular deal). Now the $ Total and $/mo avg would be closer to the true cost plus or miss a small amount for different local tax rate.

For my Team VW example adding back $2100 to $ Total of $3195 for my true cost is quite significant. $106.50/mo vs $176.50/mo!

Please forgive my neophyte questions. Thank you.

Not sure how far EPA-estimated 238 miles will get you? Think about it this way: The average daily commute is only about 40 miles round trip. So you'll have more than enough range to get through an average day - and you could go up to three or four days, or even more, without needing to plug in.

1) My bad... Apparently at some point the offer was updated from $2000 down to $2500 down. The $2644 is for $2000 down + $625 acq fee + $19 1st payment. Sorry about that.

2) Everything is negotiable... but if they're already the lowest price in town, it may be tough to go lower. When I counter offer, I make sure to tell them that I will take the car home today if they meet it. If they say no, I'd walk, but not without asking them to call if they can come close to it. I've had mixed reactions over the years, including being stopped at the door. Most of the time I walk, they call back, and I get the car if I hadn't already gotten my deal at another dealership.

3) For the ranking table I prefer to use figures that don't include tax and license. This way the offers from different states and counties can be compared. Most dealers don't include tax and license, so it's also less work on my part as well as less assumptions and estimation on my part.. so hopefully less prone to errors/inaccuracy. In the future when I have more time I may create another table that includes tax and license.

Sorry again for the delayed response. Great questions!

BD - definitely not a published deal, negotiated this to here.

Scott W said...

For those of you in CA, how long did it take to receive your rebate from the state? Were any of you selected for income verification? I was told that it takes around 30 days to process and approve your application if you are not selected for income verification, but they take their time to actually send you the check (1 to 2 more months).

GalaxE said...

Are you including the vehicle wear and tear cost which the dealer charges at the time of returning the vehicle on Lease completion ? is that usually 500/- ?

cheers
R

vrabbit8 said...

@Scott W: when I did the rebate 3 years ago, it took months. I submitted in April and seem to remember it was Oct or Nov before I got the check. I don't know if it's quicker nowadays.

Didn't have any income verification issues. This time around the submit process seemed to be much quicker with it all online. I did get approval of my rebate last week. And it said typically within 90 days of approval (that would put my rebate by early July).

RespAmerica -

The lessor (usually a bank or financial company, not a dealer) will charge for excess wear and damage. Usually, at least in my experience and others that I know of, that amount is $0. No charge for "normal" wear. Guidelines are usually clearly defined at the start of a lease. Here is an example:

https://www.gmfinancial.com/finance-options/excess-wear-and-tear.aspx

To answer your question, excess wear and tear is not included in the numbers on this site.

vin said...

Scott W - I've gotten 4 rebates so far, for cars leased in Jan 2013, Jan 2014 (2), and Nov 2015, so my data is a bit old. Seemed to take about 6 to 10 weeks after the paperwork was sent in. None of my rebate apps were caught up in the funding gaps.

vrabbit8 - I think it was 3 years ago when funding ran out (one of two or three occurrences, I believe) and folks were put on a waiting list. The money was flowing again after new funding kicked in around September. Perhaps you were affected by that?

vin said...

Vishal - why did you opt for a 2-year lease? Do you not qualify for the CVRP $2500 rebate (which requires a minimum 30 month lease)? Just curious. I know there's a lifetime limit of 2 rebates per individual, for rebates on vehicles acquired after Jan 1, 2015. In my case, I can apply for one more rebate.

Vishal said...

Yeah, don't qualify. Figured a 2 year lease, then make a purchase in 2 years once there are a few longer range EVs on the market.

Confirmed. Premier Nissan of San Jose Leaf lease for $89/mo works like this:

1) Your company has to be a part of the Nissan VPP. Call them to confirm
2) You are in the Loyalty program - this means you have owned a Leaf and can provide the VIN as proof. If not $1K more due at signing.

If you have all the above then you can get the deal: base model Leaf, $2K due at signing (includes 1st month), $89/mo, 12K mi per year, 2 yrs

Ask for Olu. He knows how it works.

Thanks for all your dedication to your website, I can't imagine how many hours you spend weekly.
Whats your next car going to be?

Unknown said...

On the OC Fiat Lease I see a $1592 drive off but the website shows a $0 drive off. What am I missing?

vin said...

Eric, the fine print in the OC ad states that the $2500 CVRP rebate is due at signing so it is not a true $0 drive off. Pretty sneaky, huh?

Since I exclude tax and license on all offers when listed on the ranking table, I show the drive off as $1592+tax+lic instead of $2500.

vin said...

Hey thanks Tony! Weeks like this it takes several hours but at the beginning of a new month it seems double or triple that. Just the discounts page takes several hours so for now updates will be biweekly at most, but at least once a month.

Next up according to the wife is a Pacifica Platinum Plug in. I told her it's hers once Chrysler passes the entire Federal rebate to the lessee, resulting in a payment of around $450/mo with true $0 drive off. Maybe six months from now, judging by what's happening with the Bolt deals.

Thanks for asking and for the kind words!

Ray said...

Just an FYI vin, I know you keep posting Orange Coast Fiat at $99 with $2500 drive off, but it's really $99 with $3500 drive off, they require a lease conquest rebate.

See the tiny fine print on the website.

vin said...

Most dealer offers include one or more conditional offers, so it would be a lot of work that is prone to error if I had to subtract conditional offers before posting here. So I must ask readers to be prudent about reading the fine print in the dealer offers.

Recently I've added a note at the bottom of the dealer ranking tables to remind folks that they need to refer to the dealer web site:

"NOTE: Many of these offers include conditional incentives and/or rebates (i.e. recent college grad, loyalty, competitive, etc). Check dealer site for details."

Now that you've mentioned it, I suppose using fine print to advise folks to read the fine print probably isn't very effective. :-/ Maybe a FAQ would help?

Ray said...

Lol, no if readers don't read fine print, they don't read FAQs. haha
I just thought that you pulled it from their website and didn't notice the extra $1000 required there.

Hi Vin, love the website, thank you for putting it together. I wanted to put Tracy Chevrolet on your radar for its Bolt deal. $239/month + tax with $1999 due at signing, plus fees and taxes. When I looked in the online inventory at the specific car at this price, it also has DCFC.

website is here http://www.tracychevrolet.com/weekly-ad.htm.

Thanks bolt shopper!!! I added Tracy Chevy's Bolt and Volt lease deals to the list. Totally appreciate the help... Thanks again!

Autocom Nissan East Bay in San Leandro CA sold me a Leaf S with $160+tax/month and $0 drive off, sales tax, fees, 1st month payment all included. This is VPP. 36 months, 12K/year. Non-VPP adds $1,000 to the total. The internet sales consultant is Mommsen Lee, very straightforward and nice guy.

Unknown said...

Great list, how to list the Hyundai Ionic lease deal is obviously a challenge. Not only is the mileage unlimited but they kick back what you pay for electricity to power it, or at least an amount per kwh. Since it affects the $/mi might I suggest you assume 12k miles/yr and 15 cents/kwh (lacking a more accurate number, this seems in the ballpark of what I've seen).

The kwh kickback would also affect the total paid.

Example, 36,000 miles = 9,000 kwh x .15 = $1350 so 275x36 - 1350 = 8550

Cost per mile = .2375

vin said...

Congrats on the great LEAF deal, KZ! And thanks for the tip on autocom Nissan... I've added their LEAF S lease offer to this list. I appreciate the help!

Good positive experience at Tracy Chevrolet. Sales guy: Waleed (highly recommended!!)
Chevy Bolt LT 3 year lease, 10k mi: $259pm (inc tax), 2k down (all inclusive - doc reg title tax & 1st payment)
VPP required. Car was delivered home in San Jose 78 mi away at no extra charge.
Deal pricing was negotiated over 5 text messages the night before.
Acceptance by dealer was texted and confirmed.
We just did paperwork in dealership. ** Zero price discussion **
Out in 1 hour. Can't thank these guys enough!!
Hope this helps...

cooltoad - Thanks! I checked out their website, found that they advertise Volt and Bolt lease discounts, so now they're on my radar and I'll start listing them here on the EV Discounts web page. Appreciate the help! Regarding that 78-mile delivery - that's only the second time I've heard of a dealer doing this.. that is awesome.

iqra - thanks! I like to show positive comments to my wife, so she doesn't get too mad at me when I don't get the honey-do stuff done.

Dana - I'll include some notes in the comments column on the Ioniq reminding folks about the added perks of Hyundai's Unlimited+ deal, but I'll leave the analysis up to the reader. Thanks for pointing that out!

Nissan of Sunnyvale is asking for 4000 down vs 2k as listed here. Could anyone please check it and let me know if sales guy is lying ?

vin said...

RespAmerica -
I noticed that they took down the offer from their website for a day or two (perhaps because you and others asked about it after they sold the ad units), but now it's back up. My advice - Use the link on this site to get to the offer on their website, then click on "Disclaimer". They list two partial VINs of the two units that are at the $2K down offer. Check their inventory to see if on of them is still there. If so, I suggest calling them to confirm availability and if it is, get to the dealer ASAP and close the deal. Don't forget to bring a printout of the offer.

If ad cars are already gone, and they come back again at $2K down for a different unit, I'd negotiate, probably try to get them to maybe $2400 down. Then try another dealer or two, tell them about the $2K down ad, see how close they'd get to it.

If you aren't in a rush, maybe you can wait until they refresh their ad with new VINs. Probably have to move fast, though.

Just leased a 500e from OC Fiat. They have a $76 a month lease which is actually a little more than the $99 a month lease they had previously. Only difference is you get 2000 more miles per year. Net net it is an extra $54 more for the $76 lease. Cost is $3175 drive off. $2500 which you get back from the state. $675 for tax, lic, doc. The $99 lease does not have the $675 drive off fees.

Just closed the deal on 2 yr (24 month) lease at Premier Nissan - Fremont - few hrs ago

$0 Down Payment - Installment of $137 (including taxes) for 23 months = Total $3151

This includes everything - taxes, fees - everything

No service or maintenance contracts

Includes Nissan Loyalty Discount (since I returned my earlier 3 year Nissan Leaf lease in the beginning of February) + VPP Discount (about $1k)

The only thing I believe everyone needs to pay at the end of lease is $395 disposition fee which is not included in the above

enjoylife said...

And to add - I don't quality for CA rebate and this is for total 12K/year (total $24K for 2 years). Anything excess is 15c/mile additional

vin said...

Thanks, enjoylife!!! I just finished updating all the lease deal info for this week, I can't believe I missed your input!!! Sorry about that... Premier Nissan will be on next week's list if they update their offer for June, and I'll try to find some time to do another update of this week's data. I will at least include it on the "Details and Links" table. Thanks for sharing your killer deal!

Eric, Chaz - thanks for the leads, got your inputs in on this week's data. This week's list of dealer offers is the longest ever - almost 100!

Please suggest. Thanks

npk007,
That sounds like a great deal. Which dealer is that?

Krishna said...

I am trying to understand the lease jargon, so this might be a naive question. Does the drive off amount col in the Best EV deal offers table consider the CA rebate of $2500?
For example, the first entry for the 2017 Nissan Leaf S, the drive off is $1500 for a monthly payment of $29 on a 24 month lease.
Is the $1500 after the $2500 CA rebate (effectively $4000 total)?

Thanks

saulys said...

CA rebate applies(and mailed to you) after you lease a car and submit a bunch of forms BUT only if you lease your car for at least 30 months. So in your case you would not be getting CA rebate at all.

Krishna said...

Thanks saulys! I used a wrong example. If it were a 30/36 month lease, does the drive off values should include all fees (lic, tax, doc, etc) and excludes the $2500. Is this right?

saulys said...

Scroll down and see the details of the deal. Check the dealer's webpage for more details. Sales tax is almost never included. CA rebate is separate and mailed to you(if you qualify), not included in the price.

Sorry for the bad news, but I am looking for some very cheap before my Model 3...

Hi there you doing a great job and I have some good news re the Carr Chevrolet Chevy Volt ad. The lease price on it is actually $219 a month not $299 a month. I checked it out because I had a hard time believing that the Volt and Bolt would be the same price.

vin said...

Thanks Chaz!!! I made the correction. I'm about to update the "Sorts and Filters", glad you caught that before I generated four more tables! I appreciate your help.

Brian - I just checked the data I collected on that deal, looks like that killer deal from premier Nissan expired 5/30. From what I recall, it was offered on two units; I suspect at least one of them was left when enjoylife walked in to check out what they had.

Premier has pulled the ad for that deal, so the deal is no longer on this list. Since they are new to the list (didn't know about them until enjoylife shared his deal with everyone), I'm not sure if they habitually offer these killer deals on a monthly basis. My suggestion is to check their website on a daily basis (I still have a link to it in the "Comments" column in the "Details and Links" table) so you will be one of the first to know if/when that offer reappears. I will check on them weekly when I check all the other dealers on Thurs night/Fri night/Sat morn, but if you do it daily you will have a leg up on it. Good luck!

Hi Vin--

Newbie here...thanks for all your fine work. I'm being told by Serramonte VW that I must pay $930 tax on the $7500 tax credit that is factored into the 30-month lease offer. Does that make sense? Is this standard on all EV leases that qualify for the $7500 credit? Why would I need to pay tax on a credit received by the dealer or manufacturer? Sorry to bother you, but I'm inevitably suspicious...

Thanks
Rick R.

vin said...

James, Chaz, JenDru12 - Thanks for the help!!!

James, although Nissan of Sacramento doesn't have a June deal, I will keep monitoring their website (and CL posts!).

JenDru12 - yeah, that Dailey Chevy deal is currently the best Bolt deal of the week. Their ad says their drive-off is all-in; if there is a catch, they might claim that it doesn't include tax on the incentive and license. But the ad does say "total drive off" and has no contradictory weasel words that other dealers use to confuse us.

Rick - thanks for the kind words! So to me it doesn't sound to me like Serramonte is jerking you around... more often than not the incentive is directed to the customer, (i.e. a rebate), and in California (not sure about other states) that rebate is subject to sales tax. I believe the total factory rebate on a 2016 e-Golf is over $10K (so it covers the $7500 fed incentive and more), so $930 sales tax sounds about right to me. Folks on the VW forum seem to be pretty cool and are responsive, I'd suggest posing the question there to confirm if you haven't done so already.

The only time I haven't paid tax on an incentive what for my wife's B-Class ED... the dealer wouldn't discuss details to me, but from what I gathered by what they said, the incentives are directly to the dealer, not the customer, so all that showed on my lease contract was a capitalized cost that was $14K under MSRP, so I didn't pay a penny of sales tax on an incentive. On all other EVs I've gotten (Chevy, Toyota, Ford) I've had to pay sales tax on the rebate.

vin said...

Rick - I just took a quick look around, from what I can tell the incentive is $7500, maybe $500 more for new grads. So the $930 tax seems high by maybe $200. I'd question it.

The June 2017 post for Nissan of Portland's 2017 Nissan Leaf S for $500 down, $170 per month is a scam. All the fees are added on later, including an $895 fee for "bells and whistles" like tire locks and anti-rust that don't total $895. $170 is swapped for $228 in the end. It was a scummy experience - the blonde work-out guy asked for my car keys for some reason he excused with checking something again weirdly, so later when I wanted to leave they wouldn't give my car keys back to me. I walked into their office and got the keys off his desk myself. Skeezy.

Great job on the website and getting all that information on here.
Love it.

I am looking into the Dailey Chevy Bolt $139/month deal, but I can't find any information online.
Do you have a link for me with details?

Tried contacting the dealer but they won't talk to me unless I provide them with all my personal information.

vin said...

Vishnu - thanks for the info!!! I've posted Ron Baker's Bolt and Volt deals on the list. I appreciate the help!

Nicole - wow, that's kinda freaky about the car keys. As for the installed dealer add-ons, I guess that's why they put "Excl dealer installed accessories" in their fine print. Glad you walked out. I looked online and rustproofing is like $120 from Ziebart and wheel locks shouldn't be more than $27, so I'd tell them on the phone that I'd give them $27 more at signoff and you don't need rustproofing for a 2-year lease. If they come back with a counter, I'd just make sure it's not more than $5/mo.

Better yet, I'd go to a different dealer and take a printout of Portland's deal and tell them I'll lease from them if they match their posted offer. Maybe Carr?

Megied - Dailey removed the deal from their website sometime this week. I'll keep watching them, but if the deal reappears, beware... See Uma's comment on my "about Vin" web page. If it were me, I'd just deal with Dublin or Fremont.

Good luck! I'll be updating the dealer offer info tonight after I'm off of work... Will focus on Bolt and LEAF offers first.

I checked all the best deals, and all of them end up adding approximately $2000 in taxes, licenses, and fees. So just keep that in mind when calculating your payments.

Ended up getting a Bolt LT with fast charge from Camino Real Chevy. 10k miles a year, $9800 total price for a 3-year lease. $2500 CA rebate coming, so the total cost will be $7300. Competitive lease discount applied. Never set foot in the dealership, negotiated over the phone, and the car was delivered to my door. There were a couple other circumstances that allowed me to get the price this low, but I believe you could get something similar($10xxx) if you do not play any games. Just have a firm price in mind (downpayment+35 monthly payments), and be ready to strike a deal if they accept your proposal. I was dealing with Marci, who was very helpful with all the information and filled out all the paperwork for the CA rebate.

Unknown said...

I spoke with the manager at Dailey Chevrolet regarding the $139+$3999 drive-off deal. The $3999 drive-off does NOT include taxes and fees. This would put the actual drive-off at about $6000. He mentioned that this is the reason why he pulled the ad, because people were upset that the advertised drive-off price was not the actual drive-off price.

Unknown said...

Tried to get the Volt deal from Martin Chevrolet, couldn't replicate the numbers here. I was quoted for 10K miles on 2017 Volt -

$3995 due at signing + $109/mo x 36
$1495 due at signing + $189/mo x 36

Either of these are with $1500 lease loyalty rebate (must currently have Chevy lease).

vin said...

Congrats on the great lease deal on a Bolt, saulys! I checked their website and saw that they don't have any specials... so you are living proof that we don't need to flock to the dealers with ads to get the best deal. Just need to be informed so you can set the right price, be sincere and professional ,and be ready to commit immediately when your terms are met. Thanks for sharing!!!

Oh, and you are absolutely right about adding about $2K to the best deals for tax/lic/fees... I do try to warn folks about the "plus tax and license" by putting a footnote at the bottom of the "Details and Links" table explaining that the total drive-off (tax/lic/fees) can be $1500 to $3000 more than just the down. Which is stupid, now that I'm thinking about it... who the heck is gonna scroll all the way down to the bottom of that huge table and read all that stuff? I guess I should move the footnote above the table so folks can see it. Glad you said something about it!

a b - thanks for the info and asking Dailey the right questions! I will update the info, disregarding the "total drive off" phrase in their ad (which can still be seen in their scrolling marquee). They shouldn't pull their ad; they should just change "total drive-off" to "plus tax and license". It's still a decent deal, but it's not the best.

John C - the numbers here are exactly what Martin advertises in the "Weekend Ad" displayed on their web site. If you didn't already do so, I suggest printing out their ad and telling them you want the ad car for the ad deal. If they say the ad cars are gone, tell them you'll take a non-ad car for that deal. Failing that, take their ad to another dealer and ask them to match it.

That being said, their ad says $109/mo, $2600+tax+lic to start, and includes the loyalty rebate. tax on the rebates is about $600, license is about $400. So their ad is really about $3600 drive-off. What they quoted you sounds about $400 high compared to their ad, maybe $300 if you include the usual "doc fee" that dealers like to charge.

crazy bLanKeT said...

@saulys

Does the 9800 include the every tax and fee? Curious, did you mention an overall amount you wanted to pay or you asked for discounts on items you knew they could meet?

@crazy bLanket
Yes, includes everything, fees, taxes, licenses. Called probably every dealership in Southern Ca. Told them upfront looking for a deal and ready to get the car the same day, if I got a great offer. Always calculated the total, as that allowed for apples to apples comparison. If you have some specific downpayment in mind, then just say so, and calculate how much your 35 monthly payments should be. They might ask what's your magic number, and if it's not an unrealistic number, they'll work with you to get you the car. Knocked off a few more hundred from their innitial great quote, and I agreed to get it immediately. They also gave me a great innitial Volt quote, $8100.

Bob,
Congrats on the Bolt EV.
I couldn't understand from your post, how much did you put down and what is your monthly?
Did you get the LT with no extras?
How are you liking the seats in the front? I heard they are not that comfortable. I drove the Bolt, but a 10 min test drive is not the same as a 45 min commute or so.

Thanks!

Unknown said...

Regarding my 2017 Bolt LT LEASE. This is a one time payment with NO MONTHLY PAYMENTS! 10,000 miles per year. Yes the front seats are a little snug, but I don't have a problem. This car has so many benefits. Car pool lane, 240 mile range, trunk is big enough for golf clubs with out the back seat down, no oil changes. Fun to drive. This car has fast charging, driver confidence package, comfort and convenience pkg, and false cargo floor.

Unknown said...

I live in O.C. so my out the door one time payment is $8,409 less $2500 CA rebate = $5,909/36 months = $164.13 per month. The only thing is that I paid $8,409 one time including tax + license. The only additional payment is $395 lease disposition fee if I don't by the car at the end of the lease. CAR OPTIONS = Bolt LT $36,620.00 + DC Fast charging $750.00 + Comfort and Convenience Pkg $555.00 + Driver Confidence Pkg $495.00 + False Cargo Floor $100.00 = $38520.00 + Destination Charge $875.00 = $39,395.00

Unknown said...

Wow. That's amazing.

Same car options as you. DCFC, convenience and confidence package.
Your deal sounds awesome. Congrats.
I'm not big by all means but I just read too much negative things about the seats. I wonder if I felt the same if I haven't read those reviews. I drove the car and seats were a bit snug. Just worried it will bother me at one point. I am only 5"5' btw. Not talll at all.
